“All that’s gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost...” J.R.R. Tolkein
In 2014 my husband and I decided to leave California after 18 years and return to New York to be with our children(seven combined) and grandchildren (11 total at the time, +1 more now). We sold our home in Old Town Orange, packed up most of our worldly possessions, donated or sold what we felt we could part with and shipped the rest back to Central New York. Thus our first 2,800 mile journey across this beautiful country with our dog Tigger, a Maltese rescue (by the way “Tiggers are wonderful things”) packed into our little BMW wagon to start the next adventure in our life.
The trip was amazing, the places we stopped to explore and the food we experienced left us with wonderful memories and a yearning to search out more.
”What were we thinking!?” Our first winter proved to be the coldest weather Upstate New York had experienced in many years, record snow fall and wind chill temperatures reaching minus 40 below. Yes, it was definitely time to rethink our plans! Oh, and by the way, we forgot nobody really left their homes in the winter other than to go to work or school when it was open.
So, we bought our first RV, a 26’ Winnebago Navion, gave our children a choice of the furniture & household goods they could use, donated more to charity and rented a storage unit for all those “worldly possessions” that no one wanted, you know the ones: Grandmothers antiques, fine china, books, pots and pans and of course clothing you can’t part with... (more about that another time).
That was four years ago! We’ve been living in New York during the warmer months and travel to California when the weather threatens snow. So far we’ve visited 38 states, traveled 40,000 miles in 9 coast to coast trips and have filled four journals, we’ve only just begun...
We’ll be sharing our coast to coast trips including routes, lodging, adventures, places we’ve visited, and great food we’ve experienced along with recipes that work while traveling in an RV...
